The 10 best coffee shops in Timișoara

Timișoara has been drinking coffee for three hundred years. In 1718, two years after the Habsburgs took the city from the Ottomans, the records listed its first coffeehouse keeper, one Johann Ermann, who had come straight from Constantinople, and by the end of the century the town of ten thousand people had fourteen coffeehouses. Francesco Illy was born here too, in 1892, in the Iosefin district: the man who would go on to found illy in Trieste and invent the Illetta, one of the ancestors of the modern espresso machine. Today the tradition carries on differently: small cafés with their own roastery or with guest roasters from all over Europe, where the flat whites and V60s are made by people who can tell you which country, and sometimes which farm, the coffee in your cup comes from.

For this guide we read the ratings and reviews on Google Maps (checked on 26 September 2026), TripAdvisor and European Coffee Trip, the local press, and each café's website and Instagram, so we can tell you not just where to go but also what to order once you get there. The Google rating is the starting point, not the verdict: we also weighed how many reviews each place has, what coffee goes into its grinder and how seriously it treats it. A 5.0 for a good cake is not the same as a 5.0 for a café that changes roaster every week.

Under each name you will find the rating, address and opening hours from Google Maps. Specialty cafés rarely publish their prices, so where we could not find them we give the range customers estimate on Google. Prices may change.

1. Legal Coffee: our pick

Nino Gabriel Găvruță was studying law at the West University of Timișoara and missed just one thing: a good coffee near the faculty. So, after graduating, he opened one himself, on Bulevardul Eroilor de la Tisa, “42 steps away from Law School”, as its Instagram puts it. The café is small, fairly hard to find if you are not from Timișoara, and holds a clean 5.0 on Google from more than 350 reviews.

What sets it apart is how it chooses its coffee. The guest roasters on espresso and filter change often, from Europe but also from Asia and South America, while the shelf always carries beans from two Romanian roasters, from Oradea and Cluj: Radical Coffee and LET’S COFFEE. On one wall, an “alumni wall” lists every foreign roaster that has passed through. In 2025 the European Coffee Trip community vote put it in the top 10 specialty cafés in Romania, the only one from Timișoara.

What to order

• an espresso or a filter from the guest coffee: ask what is in the grinder, because it changes from one week to the next
• a cappuccino or a flat white: coffee here is served plain or with milk, with no whipped cream, biscuits or sweets on top, exactly as the owner likes it
• cold brew in summer, or an iced matcha for a break from espresso
• the lemonade, plain or with raspberry
• to eat: pastries delivered fresh every morning, from doughnuts (white chocolate and raspberry, or pistachio) and pistachio croissants to danishes and cookies, one of which a customer called “the best cookie I have ever eaten”

The vibe: a small, bright, relaxed room with a few tables and a terrace. The crowd is mixed: law students, neighbours from the campus and tourists who came specifically for the coffee. You can work in peace, there is free Wi-Fi, and dogs are welcome.

What people praise

• the people behind the bar: Nino and his colleague, who has years of specialty coffee experience, are happy to tell you about every coffee

• it is outside the historic centre, next to the Faculty of Law and close to the student campus

Why it is number one: it is the only café in town that has, all at once, a perfect rating, recognition from the European Coffee Trip community and the most varied coffee in Timișoara, with a different roaster in the grinder almost every week. OVRIDE came very close, and has more than three times as many reviews, but for anyone coming to Timișoara for the coffee, Legal Coffee is the first stop.

2. OVRIDE: the pioneer, with its own roastery

One of the most talked-about specialty cafés in town, and one of the first. OVRIDE opened on 2 November 2017, on a quiet street in the centre, out of a frustration: Emanuel Greucean had discovered specialty coffee while working as a programmer in the United States, and in Timișoara he could not find the freshly roasted, properly brewed coffee he drank in Bucharest, Cluj or Brașov. The name comes from IT: “override”, to interrupt an automatic routine and take control.

Today Roxana runs the café while Emanuel roasts in small batches at a roastery in Săcălaz, just outside the city, on a Typhoon roaster. The beans are split into ranges: Core, balanced everyday coffees, Discovery, fruitier ones, and Experimental or Reserve for rare lots.

What to order

• an espresso from each grinder: OVRIDE always has two origins on espresso, a balanced one from the Core range, perfect with milk, and a more playful Discovery or Experimental
• a flat white, a cappuccino or a latte, with cow’s, oat or coconut milk: milk drinks are the house’s most ordered
• batch brew, the filter made every morning, “as good as a pour-over, at a friendlier price”, or a proper pour-over of a Discovery or Reserve coffee
• in summer, the cold brew, made as a concentrate almost as intense as an espresso; seasonally, a Kentucky Coldbrew, a sort of iced Irish coffee made with bourbon
• on the side: a pistachio croissant, carrot cake or apple pie, and if you need waking up, a ginger shot

The vibe: minimalist, with lots of wood, white walls and natural light. The walls carry photos from coffee farms and a flavour wheel, and the baristas explain where each coffee comes from and which might suit you. There is a terrace, and dogs are welcome.

3. acas: coffee and tarts, like at home

The name says it all: “acas” means home. The café on Strada Ciprian Porumbescu, in the Elisabetin district near Piața Bălcescu, has the most impressive rating in town: 5.0 from more than a thousand reviews. It is further from the centre than the others on this list, but customers all say the same thing: it is worth the trip.

On Instagram it describes itself simply as “specialty coffee & something to eat”, and that is about what you get: good coffee, savoury and sweet tarts, carefully made cakes and a team that welcomes you like a guest.

What to order

• the flat white, which one customer called “a hug in a mug”
• canned iced coffee: the coffee is made and sealed in a can you can take with you; or a cold brew tonic, “one of the best” a customer had had in a while
• a ginger shot, with the customers’ warning: it is very strong
• to eat: savoury tarts with cheese and tomato, bacon or fish, or sweet ones with apricot (22 lei a slice), banana cake (14 lei) or a slice of vanilla cake

The vibe: warm and quiet, with a décor somewhere between vintage and modern: lots of wood, white, brown and green, soft light and paintings on the walls. There are a few tables outside too. According to customers, laptops are not allowed, so the place stays for people and conversation, and the water with lemon and orange is on the house.

4. Brewno: coffee and pastries near Piața Unirii

A few steps from Piața Unirii, Brewno describes itself as a café, bakery and roastery, and two people stand behind it: Raul on coffee and Cornelia on pastry. The result is the café in Timișoara where the coffee and the cake matter equally, with a 4.9 from more than 500 reviews.

The interior, by the AVART DEARCH studio, is warm and minimalist: wood shaped into rounded forms, wooden discs on the walls, beige tones and terracotta accents.

What to order

• a flat white, the house’s most popular coffee, or a cortado
• a V60: users of the Kava app voted it the house speciality
• espresso tonic, served with slices of lemon
• to eat: pastéis de nata, a cinnamon bun, a chocolate and pistachio croissant, carrot cake or cheesecake
• for breakfast: sandwiches, bagels and cookies; one tourist called Brewno his favourite place to eat after ten days around Romania

The vibe: spacious and relaxed, with plants, retro music and, as one customer puts it, “seats always available”. It is good for meeting friends or for studying: there are tables and time slots set aside for people working on laptops. Dogs are welcome inside too.

5. Senses: V60s and unusual coffees near the Opera

On Strada Matei Corvin, a minute from the Opera, in the space that used to be the Doppio café, Senses has become the place to go when you want to talk about coffee. Almost every customer mentions the same thing: the owner, who knows an enormous amount about beans and sometimes even lets you have a go on the espresso machine.

What to order

• a V60, the house speciality: the team will happily tell you which beans they have that day, including coffees infused with tropical fruit
• a macchiato, “the best” one customer had ever drunk, or a cappuccino
• a cold brew tonic flavoured with lemon and olive, “very special”, or a nitro coffee
• decaf, if you come in the afternoon
• to eat: cakes, such as the chocolate ganache and pear, and sandwiches

6. Stația de Cafea: the living room by the tram stop

Next to the tram stop on Bulevardul Revoluției din 1989, about ten minutes from Piața Unirii, sits one of the smallest cafés in town and one of the most loved. Its name means “the coffee stop”. One customer summed it up perfectly: “more like a living room” than a café. The music comes off vinyl, and there are always people outside the door, coffee in hand. Another remembers the writer Adriana Babeți mentioning it on the TV show “Harta secretă a Timișoarei” (“The Secret Map of Timișoara”) as a place with remarkable coffee.

Stația is also one of the cafés that built the local scene: in October 2022 it hosted Timișoara’s first specialty coffee festival, with a regional round of the AeroPress championship. Roasters that have passed through its grinder include The Barn from Berlin, La Cabra from Denmark and Arusha from Maramureș.

7. Street Coffee Roasters: home-roasted coffee on Strada Alba Iulia

On pedestrian Strada Alba Iulia, between Piața Libertății and Piața Victoriei, Street Coffee Roasters serves coffee from its own roastery, at prices customers praise almost as often as the coffee. It holds a 4.9 from more than 400 reviews.

The interior has something of a wine cellar about it: exposed brick, dark wooden tables, filament bulbs and green velvet seats by the bar, with paintings of the city on the walls.

What to order

• a flat white or cold brew, the customers’ favourites
• an espresso from the house beans; over time the roastery has worked with coffees from Colombia, Ethiopia and Guatemala
• on the side: pastries and cakes

The vibe: cosy and calm, with a cheerful team; one customer recalls playing two games of mikado over a coffee. A good break in a walk around the centre.

8. Coffeerize Botanic: coffee among the plants, by the Botanical Park

Coffeerize started in 2017 near Piața Unirii and moved in December 2021 to a bigger space on Strada Mărășești, next to the Botanical Park. Hence the name: a café full of plants, with herringbone parquet and a bright bar in the middle, which now roasts its own coffee in Timișoara and serves brunch all day.

What to order

• a single-origin espresso: one customer praised a “very well balanced” El Salvador
• a pour-over or cold brew, if you want to taste the coffee without milk
• matcha with oat milk, for non-coffee drinkers
• to eat: all-day brunch, and for dessert the banana tart, “unimaginably tasty”, cheesecake, banana bread or brownies

On Strada Palanca, close to Piața Unirii, Garage Cafe brings three things under one roof: a café, a patisserie that makes everything in house, and a roastery for single-origin coffees from Ethiopia or Colombia. It is the place with the most reviews on this list, nearly 1,500.

The interior, designed by the Arhigest studio, is industrial, true to the name: chequer-plate flooring, a perforated concrete bar and, on one wall, a piece of a car chassis.

What to order

• a cappuccino made with the house beans, with cow’s or oat milk, or a macchiato
• breakfast, served daily from 8:00 to 17:00, with French, Italian, Greek or American-inspired dishes such as a Croque Madame
• cakes: carrot cake, “moist, rich”, the vanilla tart, the rose cake or the matcha cheesecake, which one customer called “divine”

Near the Cathedral, Pergament is a specialty café and a vintage shop at the same time. It is run by two young owners whom one customer describes as “super professional, always smiling”, and the coffee comes in vintage cups. It holds a 5.0 on Google from nearly 300 reviews.

The designers at arhiGAMMA conceived it as a reimagined Parisian bistro: exposed stone walls, old paintings and gilt-framed mirrors, black leather furniture.

What to order

• an espresso: there are several coffees to choose from at the bar
• a cold brew tonic, “properly balanced and aromatic”
• a milk coffee or an iced coffee
• to eat: carrot cake or a pistachio tart
