Cluj has fallen in love with brunch. Ten years ago, breakfast in town meant a croissant at a café or an omelette at a hotel. Today you can have eggs Benedict with brisket and brown-butter hollandaise, Turkish eggs with yoghurt and chilli oil, shakshuka with 'nduja, French toast made from cozonac (Romanian sweet bread) and specialty coffee roasted a few streets away. And at ten on a Saturday, at the good places, you queue, and nobody complains.

For this guide we read the ratings and reviews on Google Maps (checked on 25 September 2026), TripAdvisor and the local press, and went through every venue's menu, so we can tell you not just where to go but also what to order once you get there. The Google rating is the starting point, not the verdict: a 4.8 from nearly three thousand opinions says more than a 5 from a few dozen, and an excellent Italian restaurant is not necessarily the best place for breakfast.

Under each name you will find the rating, address and opening hours from Google Maps. Prices are those on the menus published in 2026 and may change.

1. Eggcetera: our pick

4.8from 2,741 Google reviews: 4.8 out of 5 stars

Strada Octavian Petrovici 2 (Palatul Telefoanelor) on Google Maps

Monday–Friday
8:30–17:00
Saturday–Sunday
9:00–17:00

Ask anyone in Cluj where to get the best breakfast and the first name you will hear is Eggcetera. It opened in April 2018, on Strada Napoca, founded by two people from the specialty coffee world with a simple idea: good breakfast, served all day. Eight years on, it has the highest rating in Cluj for a breakfast spot, on a volume of reviews few places come close to.

Eggcetera recently moved to the ground floor of the Palatul Telefoanelor (the Telephone Palace), the 1968 brutalist building next to Piața Unirii. Regulars who have tried the new premises all say the same thing: the food is just as good, and the menu is even more varied.

What to order

  • The Benedict: poached egg, ham and hollandaise on an English muffin, the classic by which every brunch place is judged (around 59 lei)
  • Pork Benediction: the version with slow-cooked pork, the star of the menu
  • Royal Benedict: poached eggs with smoked salmon, for something a little more refined
  • Turkish Eggs or shakshuka, for something spicier
  • the Eggcetera plate: poached eggs, toast, smashed avocado, roast tomato, salsa verde and mushrooms or bacon
  • Sweet French Toast, if you are on team sweet, and a flat white, the house's most-ordered drink

The vibe: the new space is minimalist and industrial, clean and modern, in keeping with the building it sits in. The bread comes from small local bakeries, and the coffee is treated with the seriousness of a specialty coffee shop. It is the right place for brunch with friends or a weekend date.

What people praise

  • the hollandaise, which reviews call, in turn, “exceptional” and “the best in town”
  • thoroughly thought-out plates, with flavours that complement each other and look like something out of a magazine
  • the coffee, “top-notch” in almost every review
  • the team, quick and friendly even when it is full
  • the vegetarian and vegan options, from avocado mash to mushrooms with eggs

Good to know

  • at weekends it is packed between 10:30 and 13:30: come early or after 14:00
  • it is a special-occasion breakfast: 60–100 lei per person, with coffee
  • parking nearby is difficult, but Piața Unirii is a two-minute walk away

Why it is number one: it is the only place in town that is at once the best rated, the most talked about and entirely devoted to breakfast. It defined brunch in Cluj and, after eight years and a move, it still holds the standard.

2. Pasquale: Italian brunch on focaccia

4.9from 2,442 Google reviews: 4.9 out of 5 stars

Strada Napoca 27 on Google Maps

Monday

Tuesday–Sunday
10:00–22:00

The highest rating on the list. Pasquale is a small Italian restaurant on the corner of Strada Napoca and Strada Potaissa, a few steps from the old city wall, which serves an Italian-accented brunch every day between 10:00 and 16:00. Almost everything comes on house-made focaccia, which customers praise nearly as often as the eggs. Some put it bluntly: “the best brunch place in town”.

What to order

  • Italian Eggs Benedict: poached eggs with ricotta cream, mortadella, hollandaise, asparagus and cherry tomatoes (45 lei), a generous portion
  • Roast Beef Benedict: slow-cooked beef, truffle mayonnaise, parmesan and confit tomatoes (52 lei)
  • 'Nduja Shakshouka: eggs in tomato sauce with Calabrian 'nduja, mozzarella and basil (42 lei)
  • Parmigiano Fries & Garlic Poached Eggs: parmesan chips, poached eggs, roasted garlic sauce and crispy prosciutto San Daniele (46 lei)
  • Burrata Focaccia Toast, with salsa verde and cherry tomatoes (41 lei)
  • French Toast made from cozonac, with honey and vanilla Greek yoghurt and raspberry sauce (41 lei)
  • and, for an unhurried brunch, a Mimosa or a Limoncello Spritz (17 lei with a brunch dish)

The vibe: a small, welcoming dining room with an Italian feel, and a terrace on the cobbled pedestrian street. The coffee is roasted in Cluj, by Yume, and from Tuesday to Friday, coffee is free with any brunch dish. In the evening the same place serves pasta, vitello tonnato and seafood, so many people come for brunch and return for dinner. Perfect for brunch for two.

What people praise

  • the service, warm and attentive, mentioned in almost every review
  • the focaccia and the roast beef eggs Benedict
  • value for money, for a restaurant of this calibre
  • the terrace, in one of the prettiest parts of the centre

Good to know

  • the dining room is small: book online, especially at weekends
  • brunch is served from 10:00 to 16:00
  • budget: 40–100 lei per person

3. Madrugada: a holiday in the city centre

Strada Horea 9 on Google Maps

Daily
8:00–17:00

“Madrugada” means “dawn” in Spanish, and the place on Strada Horea, opened in summer 2024 by four friends, quickly became the spot with the boldest breakfast menu in Cluj. Here you do not just find eggs Benedict, but combinations that sound odd on paper and turn out surprisingly well on the plate. All the desserts and the cola are made in-house.

What to order

  • Brisket Eggs Benny: sourdough bread, beef brisket, BBQ sauce, poached eggs, pesto and hollandaise (64 lei)
  • Carbonara Breakfast: soufflé eggs, crispy bacon, aged cheese and a carbonara-style hollandaise (55 lei)

  • Uruguay Steak Breakfast: Uruguayan beef, fried potatoes, fried eggs and alioli (69 lei)
  • Green Shakshouka, vegetarian, with peas, green beans and asparagus (56 lei), or a Vegan Full English with tofu (48 lei)
  • for dessert: creamy papanași (Romanian fried doughnuts) with sour cream and strawberry jam (40 lei) or Tiramisu French Toast (42 lei)
  • to drink: the Cola de Casă (house cola), the reviewers' favourite, or an espresso tonic with house cordial

The vibe: Madrugada wants you to feel “on holiday, in the city centre”: sun hats on the walls, straw chandeliers, natural tones, plants and flowers on every table. There is a children's menu (and babyccinos), a whole vegan section and a team that keeps smiling even when there is a queue. Good for families, for friends and for anyone who wants to try something new.

What people praise

  • the generous portions: you will not leave hungry
  • the unexpected combinations that turn out surprisingly well
  • the friendly, welcoming team
  • the holiday décor, with palm trees and hats

Good to know

  • no reservations; at weekends expect to wait around 20 minutes
  • pets stay at home
  • budget: 60–80 lei per person

This is the place to take someone who “doesn't eat eggs for breakfast”: it will win them over.
